What is data centre colocation?

Colocation — or "colo" — means housing your physical servers and networking equipment in a third-party data centre rather than in your own building. You own the hardware; the data centre provides the physical space, power, cooling, physical security and high-speed connectivity.

For most organisations, colocation is significantly cheaper than maintaining your own server room once you factor in the true cost of power, cooling, physical security, redundant connectivity and the engineering resource needed to keep everything running. It also delivers a level of resilience — redundant power, multiple connectivity providers, staffed facilities — that most on-premise environments cannot match.

Who is colocation right for?

What Open Way Technologies does

Open Way Technologies holds relationships with leading carrier-neutral data centre operators including facilities with 300+ data centres across 55+ metros in 30+ countries. We assess your current infrastructure, understand your requirements — capacity, connectivity, compliance, geography — and identify the facility that best matches your needs. We then manage the commercial negotiation and introduction. At no cost to you.

The 2027 data centre opportunity

AI and data-intensive workloads are driving unprecedented demand for data centre capacity. Organisations that lock in colocation arrangements now — before capacity tightens further — will be better positioned on cost and availability. Open Way Technologies can help you understand the market and secure the right capacity at the right time.

How much does colocation cost?
Costs vary significantly depending on the amount of space (measured in cabinets or kW of power), connectivity requirements and the specific facility. Open Way Technologies will obtain competitive quotes from multiple operators and present you with a clear comparison. There is no cost to you for this process.
Do I have to move all of my infrastructure at once?
No. Many organisations start with a partial migration — moving specific workloads or servers to colo while keeping others on-premise — and expand over time. Open Way Technologies can help you plan a phased migration that minimises disruption.
What about cloud? Should I be looking at that instead?
It depends on your workloads. Cloud is excellent for variable, scalable workloads. Colocation often delivers better performance and lower cost for consistent, predictable workloads — particularly latency-sensitive applications or large data sets. Open Way Technologies takes an independent view and will tell you honestly which approach is right for your situation.
How long does it take to set up colocation?
Lead times vary but a typical colocation setup takes 4-8 weeks from order to go-live. In urgent cases, some facilities can accommodate faster timescales.
